Up until a couple of years ago I didn't care about the quality of food and where the food came from. It just wasn't something I really thought about or something I thought I needed to think about. But that's because I wasn't informed. I didn't know about organic food, why it's important to eat locally grown food, and I definitely wasn't aware of the impact of the choice not to incorporate both of these factors into our daily lives when deciding on what to eat.
The choices we have made regarding food have completely changed the food industry and we need to change it back. If you cannot see the change I'm talking about, well that's a completely seperate post.
I want to focus on the solution and how we can make a positive change not only for our health but for our economy as well. Heritage Prairie farms is raising the bar on quality food and providing the Chicagoland area with a local, sustainable solution.
Excited for my road trip (regardless of I-290 being a two lane mess right now), I had been wanting to visit Heritage Prairie to learn about the people caring for the farm, how they operate, and what the farm struggles with from day to day. As I pulled into the gravel parking lot, I immediately fell in love with its landscape...for any of you brides to be this would be a perfect spot for a vintage farm/garden wedding.
I first met with Anna Wilson the events coordinator and she gave me a tour of the farm's storefront. The store features a variety of quality honey from its honey farm down the street and also carries an assorted selection of local goods. You can visit their online store here http://hpmfarm.com/shop.html.
We then met up with Ted Richter, the farm manager. He was kind enough to give me a tour and as we were walking towards the Greenhouses he had to point out what each crop were since I really couldn't tell between a carrot or a tomato...he pulled one from the ground to prove to me it was indeed a carrot.
We discussed important issues from GMO's (Genetically Modified Organisms) to certified organic labels and the need for locally grown food. Ted emphasized how important it is for them to focus on the impact they can make with the farm. Through various outlets such as classes, private events, and CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) they are able to educate the community and leave a lasting impression for people to see how beneficial it is for everyone to rely on locally grown, sustainable food. Making the connection with the consumer that is ultimately going to consume your product is what farming is about for him.
I had an amazing afternoon talking with Ted and look forward to revisiting the farm soon.
